Mini Donuts/Richard & Co. Donuts

As I type this entry, I am squarely in the middle of fair/portable food season. This is the time when you look for foods you can carry from place to place, at a fair, or in a park, all while not needing more than a small utensil to eat what you’ve got. In other words, this is the season for mini donuts. Thankfully this season, I came across a new entry in the mini donut field: Richard & Co. Donuts.

An order of donuts.

They had a setup at Rock’n On The River at River Prairie Park in Altoona; they’ve been at similar locations throughout their first year of operation. Their menu was full of donut varieties, all of which looked quite yummy. The best part was knowing that the donuts were going to be made right in their pop-up tent after I placed my order. I decided to go for the classic — Sugar & Spice — and a new option — Breakfast Royale.

The Sugar & Spice donuts were just what you would expect from a good cinnamon sugar mini-donut. Oftentimes, you’ll see food reviewers spotlight baked goods that are soft on the inside with a crunch on the outside — this had that. The cinnamon sugar had the right amount of flavor, the interior had that great donut-y doughiness, and the frying on the outside led to a little crunch.

A delicate sprinkling of bacon atop the whipped cream, maple syrup, and peanut butter.

Meanwhile, I decided the best time to have the Breakfast Royale was at, well, breakfast. I mean, you really will enjoy it at any time of the day, but I went for a descriptively chronological appropriateness, and it was a good call. Bacon, peanut butter, and syrup all go well together; the ratio (as you’ll note in the above photo) was just right matched to the mini donuts’ size. Add that tiny dallop of whipped cream, and it really is a sweet little fancy breakfast.

Like I noted above, Richard & Co. Donuts is going to be at a lot of coming concerts and happenings, so if you play your schedule just right, you could probably order everything on their menu. Try it all if you can, while you walk around satiating your hunger this summer.
