How To Find The Right Salon or Hairstylist For You

Are you currently salon hopping and looking for a new hairstylist? Are you feeling overwhelmed with your options but underwhelmed with your appointments??  I am Meg Ann Lee, a hairstylist in the Eau Claire area and this week I am breaking down the 5 main things to look for when you are searching for a hairstylist or a salon.

Budget and Pricing

As a hairstylist I think this is one thing clients forget to check first! Don’t get your heart set on booking with a stylist then learn their pricing doesn’t align with your budget.

However, don’t solely focus on the cost; consider the value you’ll receive for the price, including the quality of service and products. Cheaper is not always better.

What’s great about the hair industry for clients is it’s SATURATED. You can shop around and find someone in your budget with the skills.

Where can you find their prices? A salon’s pricing can be found on their website or their social platforms (not in their DM’s). If you are trying to save a little on your hair appointments check out my previous blog post for some budget friendly salon tips.

Referrals

The best way to find a good hairstylist is to ask someone who has hair that you love where they go! I personally think a successful hair appointment comes down to personality and communication between hairstylist and client but when in doubt book a consultation. Most salons offer consultations for free so you can get a feel for the hairstylist and environment. When receiving a referral, understand some stylists specialize in certain types of services. So, if your bestie has a short brown bob and recommends her stylist to you but you’re looking for a hairstylist specializing in blonding and extensions, it might not be a perfect fit.

Certifications and Experience

I cannot tell you enough, please, look at a salon’s or hairstylist’s portfolio. They usually will be posting before and after work. If they are doing specialty services like extensions, they should be certified. Brand certifications don’t mean EVERYTHING when it comes to receiving a technically correct service. However, continuing educations as a hairstylist is a must. A seasoned hairstylist with relevant training is more likely to provide a quality service. So, shop around.

The services you want are done effectively at that salon

Seems simple enough right? But, not all hairstylists offer all services at the same level. Some stylists will specialize in a technique or trend and decide not to do certain techniques. For example 95% of my clients are receiving color services or extensions. I do still offer short, structured haircuts, but I don’t consider myself a barber or have extensive specialty training in that area. Cosmetology training and education is truly different for each stylist. That makes it really hard for clients to navigate but that’s why I’m writing this post!

Ambiance and Vibe

Visit the salon in person to assess its VIBE. That sounds so cliché, BUT, choosing a salon that you feel comfortable in is so important. You should want to support a business that alligns with your views and values.  I personally work at an artistic, eclectic salon and my clients like that they don’t have to come in high heels and full glam to get their hair done. You should feel welcomed and confident when you are at your hair appointment.

I hope this blog post helps you find your favorite hairstylist <3
