Why Your Hair Color Fades So Fast And What To Do About It
You just spent hours in my chair. The color is perfect. You’re obsessed. And then three weeks later you’re already texting your hairstylist “why does it look different already?” Nine times out of ten, it’s not your color. It’s your routine. I’m Meg Ann Lee, a full time hairstylist at Moss salon in Eau Claire, and I am here to help you with your hair routine!
Here’s the truth nobody loves hearing. What you do at home matters more than what I do in the salon. I can mix the most beautiful formula, tone it perfectly, and send you out the door looking incredible. But if your daily habits are working against your color, no stylist can outrun that. So let’s talk about it.
You’re Washing Too Often
Every single wash opens your hair cuticle and lets pigment escape. That’s not an opinion, that’s science. Color molecules sit inside the hair shaft, and hot water plus friction pulls them out faster than anything. What to do instead: Stretch your washes. Two to three times a week max. Dry shampoo is your best friend between washes, and when you do wash, lukewarm water. I know. I’m sorry. But your color will thank you.
You’re Using the Wrong Shampoo
If it’s not sulfate free, it’s stripping your color every time you lather up. Sulfates are aggressive cleansers that don’t know the difference between dirt and the pigment you just paid for. They take everything. What to do instead: Find a sulfate free, color safe shampoo that works for YOUR hair type. Not your roommate’s. Not whatever was on sale. Your hair texture and density matter when choosing products, and the wrong ones will work against you even if the label says “color safe.” I’ve written about finding the right products for your texture before check them out!
You’re Toasting Your Hair
This is the one that gets my blondes! Think about it this way. When you put white bread in a toaster, what happens? It turns warm and golden. Your hair does the exact same thing every time you flat iron, curl, or blow dry on high heat without protection. You’re literally toasting your hair. Those bright, cool toned blondes go warm and brassy not because the toner failed but because heat changes the tone of your color over time. What to do instead: Heat protectant. Every. Single. Time. It’s a non negotiable. And turn your tools down!! You do not need 450 degrees to style your hair. Most hair types do just fine between 300 and 375. Your color will hold so much longer when you stop cooking it.
You’re Ignoring the Sun
UV exposure breaks down color molecules the same way it fades a t shirt left outside all summer. Blondes get brassier. Brunettes get warmer. Reds fade more dull. Summer is the worst offender but it happens year round. What to do instead: UV protecting products exist and they work. Leave in sprays, serums, even some styling creams have UV filters built in. If you’re going to be outside for hours, wear a hat or a bandana.
You’re Swimming Without a Plan
Chlorine and salt water are brutal on color. Chlorine is a chemical that actively strips pigment, and salt water dehydrates the hair shaft which makes color fade and look dull. What to do instead: Wet your hair with clean water before you get in the pool or ocean. Hair that’s already saturated absorbs less chlorine and salt. Then rinse immediately after. A leave in conditioner before swimming adds another layer of protection.
The Realistic Expectations Conversation
All hair color fades. That’s what it does. Especially if you over process your hair. Even with the best routine, your color on day one is not going to look identical to your color on week six. That’s not a flaw in the service. That’s the nature of hair color. Some shades fade faster than others. Vivids, reds, cool tones and fashion colors are the most high maintenance. Cool toned blondes need toning maintenance. Brunettes hold the longest but still shift with wear.
What I can promise you is this. If you take care of your color at home, the difference between “my color faded gracefully” and “my color turned into something I didn’t sign up for” is massive. Your routine is the single biggest factor in how long your color lasts between appointments.
If you’re not sure what products are right for your hair type or you want help building a routine that actually protects your color, set up a consultation with me at Moss. That’s what I’m here for <3
