Sweet Potato Pie/C&T’s Soul Food

There is a difference between pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie. That may seem obvious, since, well, a pumpkin and a sweet potato are not the *same* thing — for starters, technically, the former is a fruit and the latter a vegetable. However, the pies that can be made from those items are orange and often consumed around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

That topic came up while my wife and I were eating at C&T’s Soul Food in the Shopko Plaza (right on the end of the line of stores next to the spot where the old Shopko building was just about fully-demolished when we went for dinner). Their sweet potato pie was one of the signature desserts, so, of course, that was my choice to complete the meal.

You’re typically going to find sweet potato pie in the southern part of the U.S. Interestingly, I’ve had it most holiday seasons in an absolutely fab recipe from my mom (she of “Tuesday Afternoons With Luc’s Mum” Facebook fame), in which she incorporates cardamom. Of course, there are plenty of ways to make a tasty sweet potato pie, and considering the awesomeness of the food at C&T’s Soul Food, you knew there was a tasty variety in store for dessert on their menu.

There was a bit of a buttery flavor included — rich, somewhat savory, worth taking in each bite as long as could be done. It surely is different from pumpkin pie — not dramatically so, obviously, but if you imagine having a sweet potato with a meal, add a little sweetness, and convert it into pie form, you have an idea of what I ate. Better yet, go to C&T’s Soul Food and order it and enjoy it for as long as you can, because you will.

Really, you’re going to enjoy everything on the menu. My wife was craving their catfish, and her craving was satiated (with plenty we brought home); I went Italian beef sandwich, and, wow. Also, the cream cheese pie is a family recipe; my wife went with that, and it was a mega-winner (we both had a bit of each other’s pies).

You likely have had pumpkin pie; I would reckon most everyone has had pumpkin pie by adulthood (barring an allergy to something in the basic recipe). I would imagine you likely have not had sweet potato pie; regardless if you have or have not had some, go have some at C&T’s Soul Food, and understand the difference in the pies. The delicious difference.
