New Year’s Resolutions

It’s almost 2024! Can you believe it? This last year flew by. This is about the time we start thinking about what we want to accomplish next year and setting resolutions. Maybe we want to start going to the gym more, or maybe we want to get a leg up in our career. We can also start helping our kids set their own resolutions. Here are some tips to help your kids set their own goals for the new year ahead.

Share Your Goals

What are your resolutions this year? Discuss your goals with your kids. After all, you have to lead by example.

Praise Them For Their Accomplishments

Don’t use this time to remind your children what they failed at last year. Instead praise them for all they’ve accomplished. It will boost their self esteem and encourage them to keep working at reaching their goals. Anything is possible will a little hard work and dedication.

Let Them Decide

Don’t dictate what their goals should be. Really listen to what they have to say. My son has really been working at improving his art and music skills, so we made it a goal to set aside 30 minutes a day to focus on art. If you decide what their goals should be it won’t be any fun for them and they aren’t going to stick to their goals.

Be Specific and Realistic

Are their goals realistic? Make sure their goals aren’t unmanageable to avoid them feeling defeated and giving up.

Help them be specific with their goals. Maybe they want to be a better reader. Set aside a specific amount of time each day to reach this goal. If they want to help around the house more give them specific tasks that are reasonable such as setting the table for dinner.

Expect Off Days

Expect them to have a day where they aren’t able to work towards their goals. Maybe you’re going out of town or they may just have an off day. Kids are people too and it doesn’t mean they’re failing. Pick it right back up the next day and try again.

I hope you all have a wonderful New Year and that you are able to set some exciting new resolutions.
